I work for a school district which uses JAMF's Casper suite to manage our Macs. We recently received a new shipment of mbp's which have been updated to 10.8.4. With Casper we are able to push out software packages without any end user involvement. This is especially convenient so we don't have to input the admin password with each install. We use a couple of Java based applications as well as Java enabled web sites for education. Problem is I can install JDK 7 Update 25.pkg which takes care of viewing webistes but when I attempt to open our Java desktop apps it asks if I want to install Java SE 6 runtime which requires an admin password. I've tried installing Java 6 from Apple's download page but when I attempt installing it says I must be running 10.6.x. Is there any way of installing runtime without an admin password and where might I find the runtime package. Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Thanks.

Java software allows you to run applications called 'applets' that are written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Corporations also use applets for intranet applications and e-business solutions. Download the legacy Java SE 6 installer from here.Click the Download button to begin downloading. Once the file is downloaded, do the following. Go to Application Utilities and open Script Editor.

  • I've already posted about this, but I didn't get a meaningful answer, and another user who posted with the exact same issue was also unanswered.
My question is very simple: How do I install Flash Player on a Mac without an admin password? The downloadable installer demands one before it will do anything. When I click 'show package contents' and extract the Flash installer package, open it up manually, and unzip the archive inside it, I get an unusable 'Flash Player.plugin.lzma' file.
I need a way to decompress the Flash Player.plugin.lzma file.
    OR
I need a link to download the Flash Player plugin, as in the actual 'Flash Player.plugin' file, and NOT an installer app, which the main download link offers.
    OR
An installer program that can extract and install the Flash Player file into ~/Library/Internet Plugins and do so WITHOUT demanding an admin password.

This password prompt is presented by your operating system, and is intended to keep you from accidentally installing software.
If this is your personal machine and you don't need a password to log into the computer when it first starts up, you can probably leave the password blank and click OK to get past this prompt. If this is your personal machine and your normal password isn't working, check to make sure that CAPS LOCK is off, and type the password carefully.
If this is your work machine and it's asking for an Administrator password, well, you'll need to have a conversation with your friendly IT person.
If you're still stumped, you may need to reset the password on your Mac:

Not that Windows security is the greatest but generally these types of things are not easy to bypass. They are security related afterall. I think you will need to contact you IT department about installing the runtime engine for you.

  • Hi, I just upgraded from L to ML. I want to try to use XCode. When I try to start XCode it says do I want to install Java SE 6 runtime.
Should I / do I need to do this please? (ISTR switching off Java runtime a while ago because of a security issue?)
    TIA for any advice.
BTW this is my mid-2007 24 inch iMac - this age of Mac just makes the cut for ML according to the documentation, and seems to be running it fine.

  • After I have installed Yosemite, It is said I have to install java se 6 runtime to open Matlab. After installing it, error happens.
    Anyone knows what happened?

I'm having the same issue. I keep getting:
'Too many redirects occurred trying to open “https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572?locale=en_US”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page.'
    Is there another link somewhere?

  • Why does To open 'device manager' install Java SE 6 runtime appear every time I boot up computer after installing upgrade to Yosemite 10.10 OS

You must have some application called 'device manager' which is set to run at startup. Do you know what it is?
Go to System Preferences->Users and Groups, then select the 'Login Items' tab and see what's there. Remove anything you don't recognize.
If it's an application you know, and you want to run, then you're going to have to install Java on your machine. Honestly, I'd recommend against it; the application must be quite old.

  • I'm trying to install the flash player plugin without being required to give it an admin password.
Unfortunately, Adobe won't let me download it; the only thing they have for download is some 'flash installer' application that demands an admin password.
Click show package contents on the application, open Resources, find the installer package, show that package's contents, and open up the Archive.pax.gz file; inside, is a file called Flash Player.plugin.lzma which I have no idea how to extract.
So how do I extract the flash player plugin from the lzma archive thing?
Also, does anybody know what the latest version of Flash Player is anyway? Every time I think I've found the latest version, something tells me it's out of date; does the latest version require Leopard or something?

I could use the single-user hack to gain admin access to the machine in question, but I don't think its owner would like me very much if I did that.
You know the way to get an additional administrative account?
see the second post in this thread. Look for additional administrative account:
    http://discussions.info.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8398480
A second admin account lets you do what you need, but doesn't compromise their password. Let them know about it. Delete it after use.
Should be able to delete from single user mode. See:

  • I'm trying to install Final Cut Studio 2 and the system keeps asking for my admin password. I don't know it b/c I'm borrowing this computer from my dad. Is there a way to install an app without having to type in the admin password or is that step always required?
    Thanks in advance!

If your login window is showing the list of users, you can find the 'short name' for each such user by hovering the cursor over that user.
If that doesn't give you what you need, boot again directly from the install DVD and use it to enable and set a password for the System Administrator (root) account -- follow the prompts. Be sure the password you set is not blank. This is the super user that's built into the system independent of your dad's normal 'administrator' account. Now reboot again from your hard drive. In the login window, select the 'other' option that will now appear. Then login as 'root' and with the password you just assigned.
At this point you can use System Preferences / Accounts to adjust the passwords and administrator access privileges of your normal accounts on the machine.
Once you have done that, log out as 'root' and log back in as a normal administrator account. Now go to Applications / Utilities / Directory Utility and disable the 'root' user account once again for safety.

  • Hi,
I have a client machine with JRE installed. Now i see the problem that java plugin is not installed in IE. Is there anyway i could manually register java plugin for IE without using installer or java update ? would it be possible to use command line argument or such alternative please let me know.

I would like to find a way to allow a user without
administrative rights to install the Java-Plugin for
using Java-Applets. As far as I understood, the
plugin can be installed in a silent way withou
registry modifiactions. Is this working for users
without admin rights?Could anyone please explain, why it is so difficult for Sun to create an installation package for user without admin rights? The whole 'GetJava'-program doesn't make any sense for ordinary users if they get the JRE downloaded seamlessly and then the installation fails due to missing admin rights. This way Java would never succeed on the desktop.

  • I did a Software Update on around April 14 (including this update) and at the END OF THE PROCESS, I was presented with a dialog box with an admin login and password. At this moment, I accidentally hit the ESC key and dismissed the dialog box. Then, I restarted my Mac and hoping that I can repeat the same process again, but however it says there are no more updates. I did a 'java -version' and it says it using Update 31.
What was that dialog box requesting the admin/username at the end of the process? Was it affecting anything significant (or something not installed) because I accidentally dismissed it?
(I am using my mac from a 'Standard' (not 'Adminstrator') account.)
    Kevin.

Download it from the apple site and run the installer that way:
Java for OS X Lion 2012-003
If you didn't give the installer the admin password it didn't install. So doing an explicit download and installing that way should work. Of course that too will ask for your admin password.

  • Searching the internet for solutions to this and some discussion with Adobe.
Adobe say Photoshop does not use java so it should not be asking for a java runtime.
The question is how can I stop Photoshop asking to install java since Photoshop does not need or use Java to run?
Found various links that might be helpful:

However as I have Oracle Java SE 7 installed and SE 6 is deprecated and no longer supported for security reasons.
Apple is actually responsible for Java 6's security. They take Oracle's code and do whatever is needed to make it compatible with Apple's OS. Java 6 is still getting security updates from Apple. Versions 6 and 7 can also exist on the same drive. They won't interfere with each other.
Also I am assured in no uncertain terms by Chris Cox over at Adobe that Photoshop CS 5 does not use java at all and that the java error message and so called dependency is just an error on the part of Apple.
I did find a topic where Chris stated that for CS6, which I know is true. I've installed CS6 (and CC) on a newly formatted drive in Mountain Lion, and neither made any mention of requiring Java. Could have sworn CS5.5 and earlier did you Java for a few functions. Though I likely only assumed that since that version and earlier always causes a prompt to install Java if it isn't already on the drive.
So is there any way to run Photoshop with SE 7 only installed or even better with no java installed?
It doesn't really matter much if Java is installed. Java 6 should put an app in the Utilities folder by the name of Java Preferences. Open that, and you can completely disable it by undoing the check boxes.
Perhaps there is a way to make OS X stop thinking it needs java SE 6 to run Photoshop CS 5.
Apple would have to make a change to the OS itself. It's a not a user accessible setting.

  • My system is Mac HD OX S 10.8.5. I want to upgrade 10.9.1 and have downloaded it. However, to install it I am prompted for the Admin Password. I don't believe one was ever set up. I have tried my Apple Id Password but not accepted, Advice appreciated?

If you have 10.8.5 you don't have a PowerPC Mac (PPC). PPC is for pre-2006 Macs. Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to make sure you have an Intel Mac and that you didn't flip the 5 and 8 in your operating system indication. If you actually have 10.5.8 but you have Intel it gets a lot more complicated to install 10.9.
10.5.8 is the maximum for PowerPC.
10.6 can be upgraded on Intel with this tip:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2455
And it also help you get up to 10.6.6 or 10.6.8 as needed.
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6271
will help someone with 10.5.8 determine if they are ready to jump to 10.7 or later.
If you have 10.8.5, you must install 10.9.0 first (free from the Mac App Store) to get to 10.9.1.
    Backup your data:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1992
and check http://www.roaringapps.com/ and your printer, scanner, and peripheral drivers are compatible with third party vendors before upgrading to 10.9.
