Decoding Ford Motor Company Part Numbers

A lot of Ford engines look very similar. Some parts are even interchangeable between engine families. This can lead to confusion and buying the wrong parts. However, it's easy to tell the difference between them. You don't even need to look for casting numbers! You just need to look at the top, front of the engine. Additional letters between the beginning two digits (letter/number) and the rest of the serial number indicate the assembly plant location. Refer to the decoding chart. ( i ) Letter from the Ford Motor Company to all Ford offices (dated Nov. 4, 1947): 'Engine and model numbers for 1948 (Ford) cars - the lowest number used with 1948 prefixes for. 2017 ford f-150 VIN Decoder Color; 2017 ford f-150 VIN Decoder Engine Code.

Ford Part Numbers (other than hardware parts) are coded in two basic ways:

All US 'cleveland' type engines cast after that were 400s or 351Ms. Ford H/D commercials have a different kind of chassis number to a Falcon, so your engine number starting with 'A' is correct for an F-series. The last digit on the engine/chassis number should tell you what engine it is (pre- or post- ADR36 V8). Ford Truck 17-Digit Vehicle Identification Number (V.I.N.) 1. Parts originating from the USA have a four character prefix (C4GY), a four or five digit part number, ( 1130 ) and a one-letter suffix.( C ) . Example: C4GY-1130-C (Front Hub Cap on XRT GT and XWY GS Falcons)Australian numbers that start with AR and then the USA number following, usually means the part has been modified or change in some way for Australian Requirements.Example: ARC6DR 3504 C (Steering Box on XRT GT Falcons)Part numbers that start with XW , XA or similar , are generally parts made for Australian Models only.
  2. Many body-style specific sheet metal, body, interior and trim parts use seven digits in the part number, the first two of which identify the basic body type application, with the last five (“Body Group”) identifying the specific part within a general body area. A three-letter suffix may be used, usually to indicate color.Example: AR C6DZ 54 454A56 B01 ( Boot Mat XR – XT Falcon Black )So , this part number reads as follows.AR – Australian RequirementsC – Decade of the 60’s6 – Year number 6 ( 1966 )D – FalconZ – Ford Service Part54 – Body style 4 Door 454A856 – Back Group ( Luggage Compartment ) B01 – Black

Note: Part numbers used for ordering and inventory purposes, and marked on parts boxes, tags and labels should not be confused with engineering or casting numbers (normally stamped on or cast in the part for identification during the manufacturing process). They are not interchangeable — however all follow the same general rules, so these charts may be used to provide approximate interpretations of all types of these markings.
